Some Things to do on the Gold Coast, Australia

There are so many things to do on the Gold Coast, Australia, so if this is your first time here, it might be a bit daunting to find out where to go, and what activities to do. There are literally thousands of activities available here, so what I’ll touch on in this article will only be a small percentage of what’s on offer.

A lot will depend on whether you like extreme action, like skydiving for example, or something a bit more sedate, such as fishing. Either way, this list will give you a few ideas as to what you can do with your time here.

Theme Parks

The theme parks are pretty much a MUST DO while you’re here on the Coast. And no… you don’t have to be an adrenaline junky to be able to enjoy the experience. There literally is something at the theme parks for everyone, whether you are young, or a bit older. :-)

Of course, the main drawcard for the theme parks are the rides that are available… just the exhilaration and adrenaline is worth every bit of fear and trepidation beforehand.

But there is so much more on offer than just the rides. All the Theme Parks have some type of main street entertainment, marine shows or other animal shows (Sea World and Dreamworld), and other events that are held in their main arena.

You can visit Movie World, Wet’n'Wild Water World, Sea World and Dream World (which also has White Water World).

To find out more, just go to Theme Parks Gold Coast Tickets and you will get all the info you need.

Q1 Tower

The Q1 Tower at Surfers Paradise is the tallest building in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere at 322 metres to the very top of the spire, and 275m to the roof of the building. What an exhilarating view of the Gold Coast you will get from the Skypoint observation deck on the 77th floor (about 240m above sea level).

And if you want to take that to another level, why not do the Skypoint climb. This entails a climb from the 77th floor to the top of the building on the outside, via a purpose-built stairway and safety rail system (and a full body harness that attaches you at all times).

To find out more about the prices and booking info, just go to this website here … SkyPoint.

Day Trips and Tours

Some visitors that come to the Gold Coast will want to just do their own thing and see the sights at their leisure, which is fine. For others, it’s just far easier to go on an organised day tour or trip that caters to their needs and takes all of the hassle out of the experience.

There are numerous tours that are on offer (too many to mention here) but to give you a small sample there are: Gold Coast to Byron Bay tours; Gold Coast Hinterland tours; 4WD off-road tours; trips to Australia Zoo (Sunshine Coast); Winery tours; and Gold Coast city sightseeing tours.

I’ve written a more extensive review of some of these tours at Gold Coast day trips and tours.

This is what the Gold Coast is famous for… sun, sand, surf and surfing. And it doesn’t matter if you are an expert, intermediate or a complete newbie. There is the level of surf and level of instruction available no matter what your experience level is.

Check out Godo for more details.

Pubs and Clubs

If you want to head out for a night on the town, there are plenty of pubs and clubs to keep you entertained. When I was staying in Coolangatta, I went to the Coolangatta Surf Club for a great lunch and a few beers (with an excellent view of the beach and ocean). And that night I had a good time at the Coolangatta Hotel, again, right on the beach-front which you just can’t beat.

At Surfers Paradise there are numerous bars, clubs, lounges and pubs that you can take your pick from. Just go to Your Bars to get a great list of 37 places to party at.

I’ve also written an article that will help you with what to look for in Pubs on the Gold Coast of Australia.

Extreme experiences

If you are searching for an experience with that little bit extra, an adrenaline rush or a life-changing encounter, then these following activities should fit the bill.

You can experience Tandem Skydiving, Hot air ballooning, Bungy jumping, Helicopter tours, Tiger Moth joy rides, kite surfing lessons, and Jet boat rides. Many of these activities will also give you a birds-eye view of the Gold Coast and surrounds.

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary has a multitude of Australian wildlife to see, from mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians, all set within 27 hectares of lush bushland. They also have the ‘Green Challenge’ which is a tree-tops ropes course, giant flying fox, and high Tarzan swings. You can also ride around the Sanctuary on a Segway… a motorised 2-wheel, self-balancing scooter.
